The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued fresh safety directives to motorists and school transport operators following a fatal road crash that claimed eight lives along the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road.
The accident occurred on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. in the Nairegia area and involved a truck and a passenger van.
According to a police report, the truck was travelling from Narok towards Mai Mahiu when the driver lost control upon reaching the scene. The vehicle veered off its lane and collided head-on with an oncoming Toyota Voxy that was travelling in the opposite direction.
The impact killed the Voxy driver and all seven passengers on board—three men and four women—on the spot.
The truck driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Narok Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. The bodies of the deceased were moved to the same facility’s mortuary pending identification and postmortem examination.
In a statement, NTSA said it is working closely with the National Police Service to conduct comprehensive investigations into the cause of the crash.
“The Authority takes this opportunity to condole with the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones in the tragic road traffic crash that occurred in the Nairegia area along the Mai Mahiu–Narok Road,” NTSA said.
The agency announced that it will intensify Operation Watoto Wafike Salama nationwide to enhance the safety of school-going children as they return for the second term, which began on Monday, April 27, 2026.
NTSA said a multi-agency team will step up enforcement and road safety compliance checks across the country, urging motorists to exercise caution and responsibility.
“We call on parents, school administrations, and school transport operators to prioritise the safety of our children during this period,” the Authority said.
All school transport operators have been directed to present their vehicles for inspection to ensure they are mechanically sound and fit to carry students.
