Hospitals across Nyamira County have received a major boost after Governor Amos Nyaribo flagged off a Sh100 million consignment of essential medicines to health facilities across the region.
The assorted drugs, supplied by the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority, are expected to ease persistent shortages that have plagued public hospitals and improve access to critical treatment.
The consignment will be distributed to all 116 public health facilities in the county.
The flag-off ceremony, held outside the Governor’s office, comes just weeks after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale criticized the county government over alleged underperformance in healthcare service delivery.
Speaking during the event, Governor Nyaribo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the health sector.
“This is definitely a step in making healthcare work for our people,” he said.
The event was attended by several Members of the County Assembly, including Duke Oyagi Masira, Charles Keganda, Chris Osiemo, Henry Obwaya, Martha Marwa and Jeriah Nyakang’i, alongside County Executive Committee Member for Health, Dr. Donald Mogoi.
Dr. Mogoi noted that Nyamira is recording strong progress in registrations under the Social Health Authority (SHA), describing it as a key pillar in achieving a reliable and sustainable healthcare system—one of the administration’s campaign pledges in 2022.
The drugs were procured through the Nyamira County Revolving Products and Technologies Agency Fund, established under the 2025 Act to ensure a continuous and sustainable supply of essential medicines.
Governor Nyaribo also urged residents to register with SHA and called on health facilities to fully utilize the scheme’s claims system to enhance financial stability.
Beyond pharmaceuticals, the county government is investing in healthcare infrastructure and specialized services. Plans are underway to equip the renal unit at Nyamira County Referral Hospital and establish new specialized units in Keroka and other sub-county hospitals.
Additionally, advanced diagnostic equipment, including MRI and CT scan machines, will be installed at Nyamira and Keroka hospitals to improve diagnostic capacity.
