The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) removed Senator Edwin Sifuna as the party’s Secretary General with immediate effect following a meeting held in Mombasa on February 11, 2026.
In a statement issued after what it described as a “hearty meeting” to deliberate on critical party matters and the prevailing political environment, the NEC cited concerns over discipline and leadership conduct within the party.
The committee said it had deliberated on issues relating to Sifuna’s conduct and resolved to remove him from office in accordance with the ODM Constitution and applicable laws. Deputy Secretary General Catherine Omanyo will serve in an acting capacity until a substantive office holder is elected.
“The NEC expressed grave concern over the rising levels of indiscipline within the Party, particularly at the senior leadership level,” the statement read, underscoring that ODM is governed by its Constitution, the rule of law and collective decision-making through its duly constituted organs.
Coalition negotiations mandate
During the meeting, the NEC also adopted in full resolutions made by the Central Committee on January 12, 2026. Among the key decisions was a formal mandate granting the Party Leader authority to lead and oversee negotiations on ODM’s pre-election coalition arrangements with other political parties and formations.
The NEC said the negotiations would be guided by the party’s ideological foundations, strategic interests and the aspirations of its membership.
10-Point Agenda and NADCO report
The committee received and discussed a progress report on the implementation of ODM’s 10-Point Agenda and the work of a team overseeing both the agenda and the NADCO report.
While commending the committee for its diligence despite challenges, the NEC called on stakeholders to address obstacles slowing progress and demonstrate goodwill in implementing agreed reforms.
It further mandated Minority Leader Junet Mohammed to institute mechanisms to ensure the proposed allocation of Sh450 billion to counties is made mandatory in the upcoming supplementary budget.
Compensation for rights abuse victims
The NEC reiterated its commitment to justice and accountability, urging the national government to allocate adequate funds in the forthcoming supplementary budget to compensate victims of human rights violations.
It resolved that such funds should be channeled through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) to guarantee transparency, credibility and swift disbursement to deserving victims.
Azimio withdrawal process
In a significant political move, the NEC resolved to initiate the formal process of withdrawing from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
The committee cited sustained breaches of the coalition’s Deed of Agreement by certain former partners, saying the move was necessary to safeguard ODM’s integrity, autonomy and strategic direction.
National Delegates Convention
The party will convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC) in Nairobi on March 27, 2026. The convention is expected to deliberate on the party’s strategic direction, ratify key decisions by party organs and prepare ODM for the next General Election.
The NEC reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to democratic constitutionalism, social justice and the pursuit of a broad-based, inclusive and reform-oriented government that reflects the will and aspirations of the Kenyan people.
