National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula congratulated the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for confirming Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as its new party leader saying the move places the party on the right trajectory ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Wetang’ula noted that ODM, now part of the broad-based government, is poised for renewed stability and growth following a brief period of uncertainty after the death of its leader Raila Odinga.
Speaking on Sunday during separate engagements in Nandi County and Kakamega County, the Speaker commended ODM members for conducting a successful Special Delegates Convention (SDC) held at Jamhuri Grounds, where the new leadership was elected and ratified.
“I want to congratulate members of ODM for holding a successful SDC that elected Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as the party leader. We look forward to continuing engagements with him as a partner in the broad-based government,” said Wetang’ula during a church service and the handover of a bus to Chebuyusi USFW in Navokholo Constituency, Kakamega County.
He urged those opposed to the new leadership to support the party’s direction emphasizing the need for strong political parties in the country.
“We encourage those with differing views to align with the party’s vision or step aside. Kenya needs strong, stable political parties not individuals driven by personal interests that undermine institutions,” he added.
Wetang’ula observed that while ODM and Kenya Kwanza were on opposing sides during the 2022 General Election, ODM under the Azimio coalition, the two sides have since set aside their differences to work together in the broad-based government.
“Leaders who were previously in opposing camps are now working together to deliver on the country’s development agenda and transform Kenya into a prosperous nation,” he said.
The Speaker also welcomed ODM’s endorsement of Dr. Oburu Odinga, noting that his leadership supports the current political arrangement.
He made the remarks during church services in Kakamega and Nandi Counties where leaders and congregants gathered to support the construction of a church sanctuary.
Wetang’ula used the occasion to rally residents of Nandi and Kakamega counties to support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term citing the progress made under the broad-based government.
He was accompanied by Paul Biegon (Chemusei), Maryanne Kitany (Aldai), Benard Kitur (Nandi Hills) , Emmanuel Wangwe ( Navakholo) and Josses Kiptoo Lelmengit (Engwen).
