One dead, many injured after bus crashes into vehicles on Valley Road

At least one person was on Monday morning killed while dozens were injured after a bus crashed onto vehicles on Valley Road, Nairobi.

According to preliminary reports, the bus lost control while descending Valley Road before crashing into several vehicles. This trapped many drivers and passengers who were in the vehicles, police said.

The area is hilly and most of the buses using it at times get stuck.

On Monday, the City Shuttle bus lost control as it raced on Valley Road in Nairobi and crashed into the vehicles ahead of it and oncoming.

Police said the injured were rushed to various hospitals.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam on the busy road as police responded there to clear the mess.

Nairobi police boss George Seda said they are investigating the incident.

This came amid concerns most buses on the roads are not worth for operations.

Meanwhile, 12 people were killed on Sunday night and Monday morning in separate road accidents, police sai.

The victims included seven pedestrians, three passengers, a rider and pedal cyclist.

Police said 12 other people were injured in the accidents.

There is a campaign to address the accident menace in the country. Close to 5,000 people were killed in separate accidents in 2025.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes. In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting make travel increasingly hazardous
