At least one passenger was killed and more than 20 injured when a popular matatu operating in Nairobi was involved in an accident in Tetu, Nyeri County.

The popular Nairobi matatu christened Uppercut alias Makmende was involved in an accident on Sunday May 11, 2025 night while on a private trip to Nyeri.

Police said one passenger died while more than 20 people were injured after the matatu overturned at the Jua Kali area.

Police said they are investigating the incident. The injured were rushed to a local hospital with multiple injuries.

Hours before the accident, the matatu was recorded plying the Thika Super Highway and being driven in a reckless manner, in total disregard of the danger it posed

The Kenya Red Cross officials responded to the scene and helped the injured to the hospital.

“A PSV matatu has been involved in a road accident at Dedan Kimathi Ward, Tetu Constituency, Nyeri County. Emergency response teams are at the scene supporting rescue efforts,” said Kenya Red Cross.

Some Kenyans online said they had asked authorities to take action on the bus in vain.

Police say fatal accidents are on the rise amid calls for caution to address the menace.

For instance, at least 12 people were Thursday night killed in a road accident involving a Nissan matatu and a lorry at Arimi along Njoro-Elburgon Road, Nakuru County.

Police said the fatal accident occurred on Thursday night when the lorry collided with the 14-seater passenger vehicle.

Police said the driver of the matatu had lost its control leading to the fatal crash.

The National Transport and Safety Authority says the leading causes of fatal crashes include hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and vehicles and motorcycles losing control.

Also, overtaking improperly and failing to keep the proper lane, resulting in head-on collisions, are mentioned as causes.

There are ongoing efforts to address the menace.

More than 4000 people are killed annually in accidents in the country.

Thousands of others are left with injuries that leave a trail of negative impact on families.
