Police in Nairobi are investigating an incident in which a man died after being attacked by guard dogs at a garage in Kimathi Estate, triggering protests and destruction of property by an angry mob.

According to police the incident happened following reports that a group of youths were vandalising property at Kwa Musa Garage.

Police officers responding to the scene near Kimathi Estate Bridge established that two middle-aged men had allegedly gained access into the garage belonging to a businessman after cutting through a mabati fence under circumstances that are still under investigation.

Authorities said the garage owner’s guard dogs chased and attacked the two men, inflicting serious bite injuries.

One of the victims died from the injuries sustained during the attack, while the second man was rescued by youths from neighbouring informal settlements and rushed to an unidentified hospital for treatment.

The incident sparked protests from angry youths from nearby slums who later vandalised property of unknown value in retaliation over the death.

Police engaged the rioting mob in running battles before restoring calm in the area.

The scene was processed by investigators and the body of the deceased, which had visible injuries, was moved to the City Mortuary awaiting autopsy.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Meanwhile, police in Mathioya Sub-county, Murang’a County, are investigating the death of a 46-year-old man whose body was found lying beside a road in Kagumoini area.

According to police, the incident was reported by Kagumoini Location Chief Joseph Ndumo Macharia after members of the public spotted the body along the Kagumoini–Kanjama road.

Police officers from Kiriaini Police Station together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and identified the deceased as George Irungu Mwangi.

Preliminary investigations established from the deceased’s elder brother, that George had left home on Wednesday morning to look for casual work but failed to return home.

Police said the body had no visible physical injuries.

The scene was processed before the body was moved to Kiriaini Mission Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination to establish the cause of death.
