A dormitory at St. Peters Nkuene Boys High School in Meru County was destroyed by fire in an early morning incident that left one student with minor injuries.

According to police, the fire broke out at around 2.30am on Friday at the school located in Imenti South Sub-county.

The incident was reported after teachers heard screams from one of the dormitories and rushed to respond.

Police officers who visited the scene established that the blaze razed down one of the dormitories hosting about 90 learners.

Property of unknown value was destroyed in the inferno whose cause had not been immediately established.

One Grade Ten student sustained a slight hand injury during the incident while all the other occupants escaped unharmed.

Teachers and workers at the school managed to contain the fire before it spread to adjacent buildings.

Police said all the 500 students in the school were accounted for following the incident.

The scene was documented and processed as investigations into the cause of the fire commenced. Parents and guardians of the students rushed to the school as the news spread of the same.

This comes after a similar fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil killed 16 students on Thursday morning. Eight students have been arrested for arson in connection with the incident.

Seven students who were injured in the fire incident were flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Police have so far interrogated more than 50 people. The police had detained 30 students before they narrowed down to the eight as persons of interest in the arson probe.

A postmortem exercise will require the families of the deceased have to submit their DNA for analysis and identification.

A similar riot happened at Sigowet Senior Secondary School in Uasin Gishu County. The school management closed the institution after the students went on riot and refused to go to classes.
