The selection panel overseeing the recruitment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson and members has announced that only 37 individuals applied for the chairperson’s position.

In a statement, the panel—appointed through a gazette notice on January 27, 2025—disclosed that out of 1,848 applications received for both the chairperson and member positions, only 1,356 were deemed valid. Several applications were found to be duplicates or improperly submitted.

According to the panel, 211 applications were duplicates submitted either in soft or hard copy, 91 were unreferenced, 14 were stray applications, and 176 were automatic email replies to the panel’s system.

The panel’s chairperson, Nelson Makanda, revealed that of the 37 applicants for the chairperson position, six were female and 31 were male. Homabay County recorded the highest number of applicants at five, followed by Bungoma, Kisii, and Trans Nzoia, each with three.

For the IEBC member positions, a total of 1,333 applications were received, comprising 1,078 men, 237 women, and 18 individuals who failed to attach identification documents. Homabay County once again led in numbers, with 63 applicants expressing interest in the position.

“Following the longlisting exercise, the selection panel will now proceed with the shortlisting process, after which the list will be published before moving to the interview stage,” Makanda said.

He assured the public that the panel is adhering to the stipulated timelines and remains on track to complete the process within the 90-day deadline set by the IEBC Act.

“The panel reiterates its commitment to a fair and transparent selection process. The public and applicants can be assured of the highest standards of integrity, impartiality, and accountability in every aspect of our work,” he stated.
