The selection panel for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has received 1,848 applications for the positions of Chairperson and Members of the commission.
The application process officially closed on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 5:00 PM.
In a press statement, the Panel’s Chairperson, Dr. Nelson Makanda, confirmed that the verification process has begun, adding that a long list of all applicants will be released soon.
He noted that applications were submitted both physically at the Secretariat on the 3rd floor of County House Building, Parliament Road, and online in PDF format.
Dr. Makanda reassured Kenyans that the selection process will be fair and transparent, with regular updates provided to the public.
“We would like to reassure the public that the Selection Panel is committed to conducting a fair and transparent process. In this regard, we shall keep the public informed at all stages of the recruitment exercise,” he stated.
To qualify for the position of IEBC Chairperson, applicants must have at least 15 years of experience as a judge of the superior courts, a distinguished academic, judicial officer, legal practitioner, or expert in a related field. They must also meet the leadership and integrity standards outlined in Chapter Six of the Constitution. Individuals who have held political office in the past five years, including Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of County Assembly (MCAs), or political party officials, are ineligible to apply.
For commissioner positions, applicants must hold a degree from a recognized university and have at least 10 years of experience in electoral matters, law, governance, finance, ICT, public administration, or related fields. They must also meet the integrity requirements set by the Constitution.
All applications were required to include academic certificates, a curriculum vitae (CV), a national ID or passport, and clearance certificates from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and a Credit Reference Bureau.
The names of all applicants and the interview schedule for shortlisted candidates will be published in newspapers, the Kenya Gazette, and on the Parliamentary Service Commission website.
