Veteran British actor Patrick Godfrey, best known for his role as Leonardo da Vinci in the 1998 romantic fantasy film Ever After, has died at the age of 93.
Godfrey passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, surrounded by his family, according to a statement released by his talent agency, Markham Froggatt & Irwin.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm Patrick Godfrey passed away last night,” the agency said. “He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Paddy was an exceptionally talented actor and a remarkable individual, and we will miss him greatly.”
His cause of death has not been disclosed.
Godfrey earned international recognition for portraying the iconic Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci in Ever After, a modern retelling of the Cinderella story starring Drew Barrymore, Dougray Scott, Anjelica Huston, Melanie Lynskey and Megan Dodds. His performance as the wise and compassionate mentor remains one of his most memorable screen roles.
Born in England, Godfrey began his acting career in 1956 after joining the BBC Radio Drama Company. He made his screen debut in the 1972 television adaptation of Miss Julie, alongside Helen Mirren, Donal McCann and Heather Canning.
Over a career spanning more than six decades, Godfrey appeared in numerous acclaimed film and television productions. His film credits include Clockwise (1986), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), and Les Misérables (2012).
He also enjoyed a prolific television career, appearing in popular British series such as Doc Martin, The Bill, Trial & Retribution, Fallen Angel, Shades and Screen Two.
Godfrey’s final television appearance came in the BBC medical drama Casualty in 2021. His last credited role was voicing the character Jim in the 2024 short film Rejoyce!.
