Police arrest suspects, recover Weapons after gang attacks in Mombasa, Kilifi and Siaya

The National Police Service (NPS) moved to allay public concern following reports by a leading media outlet describing “gangsters on the rampage” in parts of Mombasa, Kilifi and Siaya counties, saying key suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

In a statement issued the NPS spokesman Michael Muchiri said the incidents highlighted in the report occurred on January 28, 2026, and have since been thoroughly investigated.

In Mombasa, police said the incident took place in the Tononoka area, where a security guard was attacked by young men armed with crude weapons.

Two main suspects have been arrested while a third remains at large.

Officers recovered several exhibits, including knives and a machete, and the case has already been presented before a court of law.

In a separate incident in Mtwapa, Kilifi County, detectives investigated an attack on a shop owner that was captured on CCTV on the same day.

The probe led to the arrest of three key suspects and the recovery of assorted crude weapons, 49 mobile phones, electronic items and gas cylinders.

All the suspects have since been arraigned in court and are assisting police with further investigations.

Meanwhile, in Bondo, Siaya County, the NPS said a specialised team of detectives has analysed the incident and made a “critical breakthrough,” adding that further updates will be communicated in due course.

The police service reiterated that crime of any nature will be confronted “firmly and lawfully,” and commended members of the public for providing vital information that has aided investigations.

Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja has directed all officers to accelerate service delivery to ensure the safety and security of people and property across the country.

“The National Police Service remains resolute in its duty to protect life and property and is committed to dealing decisively with all forms of criminality,” the statement said, calling for continued public cooperation in the fight against crime.
