A police officer attached to Kisii County died after suddenly collapsing while on duty, in an incident that has shocked colleagues and residents in Etago Sub-County.

Corporal Paul Kibiwott Kurui, the officer in charge of the armoury at Etago Police Station, reportedly became unconscious while leading a night patrol operation in the area on Friday.

Police said the officer was part of a six-member team conducting an operation at Muma Sub-location to arrest a suspect who had allegedly issued threats to kill.

The team successfully apprehended the suspect at around 11:50 p.m.

Moments after the arrest, however, Corporal Kurui boarded the patrol vehicle, a Ford Ranger, where he suddenly became unresponsive.

His colleagues rushed him to Etago Sub-County Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was transferred to Tabaka Mission Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Preliminary information indicates that the deceased officer had been battling chronic hypertension since 2019, a condition that may have contributed to the sudden collapse.

Police have since launched investigations into the incident, even as colleagues mourn an officer described as dedicated and committed to duty.

Elsewhere, residents of Trans-Nzoia County are reeling in shock following the brutal killing of a 43-year-old woman whose body was discovered in a sugar plantation in Kiminini Sub-County.

The deceased, identified as Viona Nafula Soita, a single mother of five from Binyenye-Mitoto village, had spent the day working on a nearby farm planting sweet potatoes alongside her family.

Police said the incident was reported in the early hours of March 27, 2026.

Her son, who was working with her in the farm, told authorities that she left the field at around 5:20 p.m. to bring more planting materials but never returned.

Concerned by her absence, he attempted to reach her via mobile phone, but his calls went unanswered.

He later went out to search for her and made the grim discovery—her body lying face down in the sugar plantation.

Police officers who visited and processed the scene confirmed that the body had multiple fresh injuries, including wounds on the neck, shoulder, and buttocks. There were also indications of severe bleeding, pointing to a violent attack.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kiminini have since taken over the case. The body was moved to St. Michael Kiminini Mission Cottage mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

No suspect has been arrested so far, and investigations are ongoing.

The incident has sparked fear and outrage within the local community, with residents calling for swift action to bring those responsible to justice.
