Police on Saturday seized bhang worth an estimated street value of Ksh6 million at Kirimon area in Samburu-Central, Sambury County.
Reports indicate the bhang packaged in 116 bales, on transit to unknown destination, was being transported in two vehicles from a neighbouring country through Marsabit and Samburu counties.
Samburu County Police Commander Karanja Miruri confirmed the incident saying three suspects have been arrested.
The suspects are set to be arraigned in court on Monday.
“We have three suspects including a woman in the police station, currently officers from the DCI are steering investigations as it seems there is a big chain of people in this illicit business,” Mr Muiruri told journalists outside Maralal Police Station.
According to the officer, police were working on a tip-off from one of the locals.
The suspects are said to have sought help from him after one of their vehicles developed a mechanical problem.
“They told the man that, ‘this vehicle has developed a mechanical problem, let it remain here we will come for it tomorrow morning.’ They were offloading some things from the vehicle and when asked what was being transported, the suspects lied to him that it was medicine to cure cancer disease but he doubted and reported them to police officers at Kirimon Police Patrol base,” Muiruri said.
Thereafter, officers visited the homestead only to find the bhang in the vehicle.
“Today (Saturday) morning, they laid an ambush and owner of those vehicles came back in another prado and they were arrested,” the officer added.

The incident comes two days after another consignment from Moyale in Marsabit County en-route to Kasarani Nairobi, was confiscated.
According to Kasarani OCPD Peter Kimani, the Ksh8 million bhang which was being transported in a petroleum tanker was concealed in 50kg packs.
The driver of the vehicle and his aid have since been arrested.
