There was a tragedy in a village in Magunga, Homabay County after a 22-year-old polytechnic student died by suicide after she had strangled her four-month-old infant in their house.
The woman had been pregnant and gave birth to a baby boy who she blamed for the move on Monday March 17 afternoon, police said.
A suicide note was found in the house explaining the tragedy.
The body of Christine Awuor was found dangling on the roof truss of her parents’ house by her mother who raised an alarm.
She had used a sisal rope to hang herself in the house, police said.
By the time locals responded to the scene, she had died.
The police said the woman was a student at the Mawego National Polytechnic.
The lifeless body of the baby was found lying on her bed while covered with a blanket.
It was later established the woman had dropped out of the polytechnic due to the pregnancy.
She left a note blaming the same on a lecturer at the institution, police said.
The woman was taking a technical course at the polytechnic when she fell pregnant.
The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending other procedures. Police said they are investigating the case.
The family of the woman was left heartbroken, witnesses said adding it had left a negative impact in the community at large.
Cases of suicide have been on the rise amid calls for action to tame the trend.
Police say up to three cases are reported daily.
The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.
Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
