President William Ruto has joined the world in mourning Pope Francis, describing his death as a profound loss to the Catholic Church and the broader Christian community.

In a message posted on X just hours after the Vatican confirmed the Pope’s death, President Ruto paid tribute to the late pontiff, highlighting his lifelong dedication to faith, humanity, and justice.

“We join the Catholic Church and the global Christian community in mourning the passing of Pope Francis,” Ruto wrote.

“This is a big loss to the Catholic faithful and the Christian world. Pope Francis will be remembered for a life dedicated to serving the Lord, the Church, and humanity.”

President Ruto praised the Pope’s legacy of servant leadership, noting his humility and deep compassion for the vulnerable.

“He exemplified servant leadership through his unwavering commitment to inclusivity and justice, and his deep compassion for the poor and the vulnerable. His strong ethical and moral convictions inspired millions across the world, regardless of faith or background,” he added.

The Vatican confirmed Pope Francis’ death on Monday.

    He was 88.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, made the announcement in a statement that read: “Dear brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His whole life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church.”

Farrell praised the Pope’s commitment to the Gospel and his love for the marginalized.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalized,” the cardinal stated.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, made history in 2013 when he became the first Latin American and the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

He served as a powerful voice for the marginalized, constantly advocating for migrants, the environment, and social justice.

His death comes just weeks after he was discharged from a Rome hospital where he had been treated for a severe case of pneumonia in both lungs.

Despite his frail health, he surprised many with a brief public appearance at St. Peter’s Square shortly after leaving hospital.

Francis’ passing marks the end of a papacy that sought to steer the Catholic Church toward greater openness and compassion.

However, his tenure was also marked by internal challenges, including divisions over same-sex relationships and ongoing efforts to address clerical abuse scandals.

The Catholic Church will now begin preparations for the selection of a new pope, as cardinals from around the world prepare to gather in Rome for the conclave.
