President Uhuru Kenyatta has rejected the Finance Bill 2018 and sent it back to parliament.

The Bill, presented by Speaker Justin Muturi on Thursday, sought to suspend the 16% VAT increment on fuel products which has effected an increase in the cost of living.

The fuel tax levy came into effect on 1 September 2018.

Speaker Justin Muturi put a gazette notice for a special sitting to be held on Tuesday 18 and Thursday 20 September, to discuss the President’s reservations.

Through the notice, members of parliament have been called from recess to discuss the President’s decision pursuant to Article 115 (2), (3) and (5) of the Constitution and the report of the relevant committee.

Different leaders including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga had called for President Uhuru to halt the implementation of the fuel tax levy.

Parliament is expected to amend the Bill and re-submit it to the President for assent.
