The Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi is set to launch human milk bank on Friday, March 29.

The project, expected to be one of its kind in the country , is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Health and PATH, a US-based nonprofit health organization.

The milk bank will benefit babies who can not get breast milk from their mothers for reasons such as poor health or death.

The project will see breast milk – donated by nursing mothers who are not biologically related to the recipient infant – collected to help orphaned and malnourished babies get the nutrients essential to healthy development.

The milk will be screened, processed before its dispensed.

Last year, the hospital was on the spot after Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko busted 11 dead infants hidden at the maternal facility.

Three senior staff including the hospital superintendent Catherine Mutinda, Dr James Kamau – the obstetrician gynecologist and the hospital’s administrator Zadock Angahya were suspended after the incident .

The governor made an impromptu visit to the hospital after a member of the public sent him a video of the corpses that were being moved.
