His father, Sharad Dravid, worked for a jam and preserves company, while his mother, Pushpa Dravid, was an architecture professor at University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering. Raised in Bangalore, he developed a keen interest in cricket from an early age.

Dravid attended St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School, where he began honing his cricketing skills. He later pursued a commerce degree at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce before enrolling in an MBA program at St. Joseph’s College of Business Administration. However, his passion for cricket ultimately led him to pursue a professional career in the sport.

    Cricket Career Beginnings

Dravid began playing cricket at the age of 12, representing Karnataka’s under-15, under-17, and under-19 teams. He made his Ranji Trophy debut in 1991 and had an impressive first full season, scoring two centuries with 380 runs.

    Rise to International Stardom

Dravid made his international debut for India in 1996, playing in an ODI against Sri Lanka. While his early performances were modest, he quickly established himself as a dependable batsman. His breakthrough moment came in 1999, when he scored twin centuries against Australia in Adelaide.

The early 2000s were the peak of Dravid’s career, as he became a key figure in India’s batting lineup alongside Sachin Tendulkar. His ability to play long innings earned him the nickname The Wall. One of his finest achievements came in 2002, when he helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy.

Between 2002 and 2006, Dravid was India’s most consistent batsman, amassing 8,914 runs across all formats. He later captained India to the final of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, where they finished as runners-up to Australia.

Despite India’s disappointing 2007 World Cup campaign, Dravid remained a crucial player, delivering stellar performances in Test cricket. His final years saw him take on a mentor role before officially retiring from international and first-class cricket in 2012.

    Records and Achievements

Dravid holds several cricketing records, including:

    • Fourth-highest run scorer in Test cricket history
    • Most balls faced in Test cricket (31,258 deliveries)
    • Most runs in a Test partnership with Sachin Tendulkar (6,920 runs)
    • Inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2018

    Coaching Career

After retirement, Dravid transitioned into coaching, beginning with India’s under-19 and India A teams from 2015 to 2021. Under his guidance, the India U-19 team won the 2018 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup.

In 2021, he was appointed head coach of the Indian senior team. His tenure saw India reach the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final and 2023 ICC World Test Championship final. However, his crowning achievement came in 2024, when he led India to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

    Personal Life
