The body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has been airlifted from the Kisumu International Airport to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo for public viewing.

This development came as a surprise to many of his supporters who had camped at the airport expecting the convoy to travel by road. Raila’s body arrived in Kisumu on Saturday morning aboard a military helicopter, which touched down at 7:20 a.m. under tight security.

Security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service, have been deployed to maintain order and ensure safety during the public viewing. Authorities have urged mourners to remain calm, observe peace, and honour the late leader’s memory with dignity.

The viewing marks one of the key national events celebrating Raila Odinga’s lifetime contribution to Kenya’s democracy and political transformation.

On Friday night, thousands of Kisumu residents filled the city streets in a candle-lit vigil, carrying flowers and singing liberation songs in honour of the late opposition chief as they awaited his body’s arrival.

The public viewing, initially scheduled to take place at Moi Stadium, was moved to the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo following adjustments to the funeral itinerary.

Raila’s body will later be transported to his rural home at Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he will be buried on Sunday beside his late mother at Kang’o ka Jaramogi.

Only close family members and a few invited guests will attend the private burial ceremony, in line with Raila’s personal wishes. Security has been tightened around Opoda Farm as preparations for the final farewell continue.
