Raila Odinga’s sister, Emily Oginga, has revealed that the late former Prime Minister was quietly working on a major political project in the days leading up to his death.
Speaking on Sunday during the national funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, Emily said Raila’s final project reflected his lifelong dedication to African unity and transformation.
She disclosed that the veteran opposition leader had begun writing his third biography, which he intended to dedicate entirely to the subject of Pan-Africanism and Africa’s future.
“Raila’s last political project, which he did quietly days before his death, was a third biography dedicated purely to African Pan-Africanism and what the continent needs to do to move forward,” she said.
Emily explained that the unfinished book was meant to capture Raila’s reflections on his political journey, the lessons he had learned, and his vision for the continent’s economic and political liberation — particularly from dependence on the West.
However, she did not indicate what would become of the manuscript following his untimely death.
Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India. He was 80 years old.
President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo are among the dignitaries attending the State Funeral at JOOUST. The ceremony has drawn thousands of mourners, both local and international, who have gathered to honour the life and legacy of the man many fondly called Baba.
Security around the venue has been tightened, with the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the National Police Service, and special units deployed to maintain order. Additional officers were flown to Siaya County to help manage the massive crowds attending the service.
Born on January 7, 1945, Raila Odinga served as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013 and as Member of Parliament for Lang’ata Constituency from 1992 to 2013. His passing marks the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most influential and visionary leaders.
