Raila’s Body Arrives at His Rural Home in Bondo

The body of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has arrived at his rural home in Opoda Farm, Bondo, Siaya County, ahead of his burial on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, thousands of mourners in Kisumu had the opportunity to view Raila’s body at the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo for several hours.

His wife, Mama Ida Odinga, and daughter, Rosemary Odinga, had arrived earlier at the Bondo home to receive the body. The residence has seen a steady flow of leaders and dignitaries paying tribute, including DAP-K Party leader Eugene Wamalwa and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who presented bulls and other items.

Raila’s remains were airlifted from Kisumu International Airport to the stadium on Saturday morning, a move that took many supporters by surprise. Thousands had gathered at the airport expecting the convoy to travel by road. The military helicopter carrying the body touched down at around 7:20 a.m. under tight security.

Security agencies, including the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service, have been deployed to ensure order and safety throughout the mourning period. Authorities have urged mourners to remain peaceful and honour the late leader’s memory with dignity.

The public viewing formed part of a series of national events held to celebrate Raila’s lifelong contribution to Kenya’s democracy, social justice, and political transformation.

On Friday night, Kisumu residents held a candle-lit vigil across the city — singing liberation songs, lighting candles, and carrying flowers in honour of the man many described as a hero of Kenya’s second liberation.

The viewing, which was initially planned for Moi Stadium, was later moved to Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium following changes to the funeral program.

Raila will be laid to rest on Sunday beside his late mother at Kang’o ka Jaramogi. The burial will be a private family affair attended by close relatives and a few invited guests, in line with his personal wishes.

Security has been heightened around Opoda Farm as final preparations continue for the burial of one of Kenya’s most iconic and influential leaders.
