    Early Life

Ralph Edward Tresvant was born on May 16, 1968, in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in the city’s Roxbury neighborhood. He developed a passion for music early in life and, while in junior high school, formed a vocal group with Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, and Ricky Bell.

The group gained attention at local talent shows and was eventually discovered by manager and choreographer Brooke Payne. Under the guidance of producer Maurice Starr, the group was named New Edition, envisioned as a modern successor to The Jackson 5. Payne’s nephew Ronnie DeVoe later joined as the fifth member.

Rise to Fame with New Edition

New Edition released their debut album “Candy Girl” in 1983. While the album had modest chart success, the title track became a breakout hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

After signing with MCA Records, the group released their self-titled album “New Edition” (1984), which reached No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and went 2× Platinum. Hit singles such as “Cool It Now” and “Mr. Telephone Man” solidified the group’s mainstream appeal.

Throughout the 1980s, New Edition released a string of successful albums, including:

    • “All for Love” (1985)
    • “Under the Blue Moon” (1986)
    • “Heart Break” (1988)

The album “Heart Break” became one of the group’s biggest successes, producing major hits like “Can You Stand the Rain,” “If It Isn’t Love,” and “You’re Not My Kind of Girl.”

    Solo Career Success

Tresvant launched his solo career in 1990 with the release of his self-titled debut album “Ralph Tresvant.” The album reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, went Platinum, and produced multiple hit singles.

Songs such as “Sensitivity,” “Stone Cold Gentleman,” and “Do What I Gotta Do” all cracked the Top 10 on the R&B charts, with “Sensitivity” becoming his signature solo hit and crossing over to the Billboard Hot 100.

He followed up with additional solo projects, including “It’s Goin’ Down” (1994) and “Rizz-Wa-Faire” (2006). His solo work significantly contributed to Ralph Tresvant’s net worth, expanding his earnings beyond group performances.

    New Edition Reunions

In 1996, New Edition reunited to release “Home Again,” their first studio album in eight years. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and the Canadian Albums chart. It was certified 2× Platinum in the United States.

The single “Hit Me Off” topped the R&B chart and became a major crossover success. New Edition continued releasing music in later years, including “One Love” (2004), which was certified Gold.

Beyond music, Tresvant has hosted radio programs such as “Inside the Ride with Ralph Tresvant” and the syndicated show “Love and R&B.” He also served as an executive producer on the acclaimed BET miniseries “The New Edition Story” in 2017.

    Acting

Tresvant appeared in the 1991 film “House Party 2,” performing his hit song “Yo Baby Yo.” His music has also been featured in major film soundtracks, including “Mo’ Money.”

    Personal Life

Ralph Tresvant married Amber Serrano on September 18, 2004, in a double wedding ceremony alongside New Edition bandmate Ricky Bell. The couple shares one child together.

    • Soul Train Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award
