Ray Davies, born Raymond Douglas Davies on June 21, 1944, in Fortis Green, London, is an English musician, singer-songwriter, and frontman of the influential rock band The Kinks.
Widely regarded as one of the most important songwriters of his generation, Davies crafted a distinctive blend of witty, socially observant lyrics and memorable melodies that captured the essence of British life.

Siblings
Ray had six older sisters—Irene, Joyce, Gwendoline, Doris, Rosina, and Peggy—and one younger brother, Dave Davies, born on February 3, 1947.

Career
Davies formed The Kinks in 1963 with Dave, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife, initially under the name The Ravens.
The band rose to fame with their 1964 hit “You Really Got Me,” a raw, proto-punk anthem driven by Dave’s guitar riffs and Ray’s songwriting.

As the band’s primary songwriter, Ray penned classics like “Waterloo Sunset,” “Lola,” and “Sunny Afternoon,” blending sharp social commentary with melodic sophistication.

Despite commercial ups and downs, particularly in the U.S. due to a mid-1960s touring ban, The Kinks remained a cult favorite.

Accolades
Davies was knighted in 2017 for services to the arts, receiving the title Sir Raymond Davies.
He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Kinks in 1990.
Davies received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music in 1990 and was honored with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2004 before his knighthood.
