Born on April 1, 1991, in Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, to parents Lester and Deirdre Smith, he stands at 6 feet 1 inch and weighs around 185 pounds while shooting left.

Smith is recognized for his speed, two-way reliability, scoring ability, and strong playoff performances.

Siblings

Reilly’s older brother Brendan Smith is a longtime NHL defenseman who has played for teams including the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, and others.

Another older brother, Rory Smith, is a professional lacrosse player who has competed in the National Lacrosse League (NLL).

The brothers grew up in the Toronto area competing fiercely in various sports, with hockey and mini-sticks battles helping fuel their competitive drive from a young age.

Career

Smith played junior hockey with St. Michael’s Buzzers in the Ontario Junior Hockey League before committing to Miami University in the NCAA.

He was drafted 69th overall by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

After three strong college seasons, including a CCHA championship and Hobey Baker Award finalist appearance, he turned pro and made his NHL debut with Dallas in 2012.

He was traded to the Boston Bruins in 2013, where he enjoyed productive seasons alongside top linemates.

Subsequent stops included the Florida Panthers and then the Vegas Golden Knights via the 2017 expansion draft.

In Vegas, Smith became an original Golden Knight and a key contributor to the team’s rapid success.

He won the Stanley Cup in 2023, scoring the Cup-clinching goal in Game 5.

After brief stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, he was traded back to Vegas in March 2025 and signed a one-year extension to remain with the team.

Smith’s major honors include being a Stanley Cup champion with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023, where he scored the series-winning goal.
