Reto has an older sister named Graziella.

However, details about his family life remain relatively private, with limited additional information available.

    Career

Berra began playing hockey in his hometown of Bülach and committed to goaltending full-time around age 11.

He progressed through the Swiss junior ranks and made his professional debut in the National League B with the GCK Lions in 2003–04.

He saw early action in the top-tier National League A with teams including the ZSC Lions, HC Davos (where he contributed to a Swiss championship in 2009), SCL Tigers, and EV Zug.

In 2009, he joined EHC Biel as the starting goaltender and enjoyed strong seasons there, earning NLA Goaltender of the Year honors in 2011–12 after posting a 2.45 GAA.

His performance in Switzerland, combined with international showings, led to his NHL opportunity.

He signed with the Calgary Flames for the 2013–14 season, debuting with a strong 42-save win against the Chicago Blackhawks.

He appeared in 29 games for Calgary before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche, where he served primarily as a backup and recorded his best NHL stretch, including a shutout.

Subsequent trades sent him to the Florida Panthers and briefly to the Anaheim Ducks, where he played five games in 2017–18.

Overall, Berra appeared in 76 NHL regular-season games, compiling a 20–36–4 record, 2.85 GAA, .905 save percentage, and three shutouts.

He also made history in the AHL by scoring a goal for the Lake Erie Monsters in 2015.

After his North American chapter, Berra returned to Switzerland and signed with HC Fribourg-Gottéron, where he has been a cornerstone goaltender for years.

He has helped the team reach deep playoff runs and contributed to their first Spengler Cup title in 2024.

    Accolades

Berra was instrumental in the team’s silver medal at the 2013 IIHF World Championship, the nation’s first medal in 60 years, posting a 4–0 record with a 1.00 GAA and .967 save percentage in his appearances, including a semifinal shutout.

He earned another silver medal at the 2024 World Championship and has represented Switzerland at multiple World Championships, Olympics (2014 and 2022), and junior events.

Domestically, he won the Swiss championship with HC Davos in 2009, was named NLA Goaltender of the Year in 2011–12, and helped Fribourg-Gottéron secure the Spengler Cup in 2024.
