Early Life
RM was born Kim Nam-joon on September 12, 1994, in the Dongjak District of Seoul. During his childhood, his family moved to the Ilsan District in Goyang, where he spent much of his youth.
RM showed academic excellence from a young age. He reportedly has an IQ of 148 and scored in the top 1% on South Korea’s university entrance exams. He also learned English by watching the American sitcom Friends.
Before becoming a professional artist, RM was active in South Korea’s underground hip-hop scene under the stage name Runch Randa. Inspired by artists like Eminem and the Korean hip-hop group Epik High, he began writing rap lyrics and performing in local hip-hop circles as a teenager.
