    Early Life

Rudy Sarzo was born Rodolfo Maximiliano Sarzo Lavie on November 18, 1950, in Havana. His family later emigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Florida.

He developed a passion for music at a young age and began playing bass guitar as a teenager during the rise of rock music in the 1960s and 1970s. Before achieving fame, Sarzo spent years performing in cover bands and local clubs, gradually building his technical skills and confidence as a live performer.

During this time, he also formed a close friendship with drummer Frankie Banali, a relationship that later played an important role in the history of Quiet Riot.

    Breakthrough with Ozzy Osbourne

Sarzo’s major breakthrough came in 1981 when he joined the band of heavy metal star Ozzy Osbourne. He was recommended by guitarist Randy Rhoads, who had previously worked with him.

Although Sarzo did not perform on the studio recordings of Blizzard of Ozz or Diary of a Madman, he joined the band for the supporting tours and appeared in several music videos during that era. His performances helped expand his international reputation as a talented bassist.

The period was also marked by tragedy when Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash in 1982. Sarzo later reflected on that experience in his memoir Off the Rails.

    Success with Quiet Riot

After leaving Ozzy Osbourne’s band, Sarzo rejoined Quiet Riot alongside Frankie Banali and vocalist Kevin DuBrow.

The band achieved major commercial success with the 1983 album Metal Health, which included popular songs such as Cum On Feel the Noize and Bang Your Head (Metal Health). The album became a landmark release in heavy metal history after topping the Billboard 200 chart.

Sarzo remained with the group during its peak years and also appeared on their follow-up album Condition Critical in 1984 before leaving the band in 1985.

    Whitesnake, Dio, and Later Career

In 1987, Sarzo joined Whitesnake during the band’s most commercially successful period. He toured worldwide in support of the group’s self-titled album Whitesnake, which featured hit songs such as Here I Go Again and Is This Love.

Later in his career, Sarzo also performed with Dio, Blue Öyster Cult, Queensrÿche, and The Guess Who.

In 2021, he rejoined Quiet Riot following the death of Frankie Banali, helping continue the band’s legacy and performing with the group on tour.

    Personal Life

Outside music, Sarzo is known for his thoughtful approach to the music industry and his willingness to share his experiences with fans through interviews, documentaries, and podcasts.

He and his wife Rebecca have been married since 1984. Sarzo has often spoken about the importance of faith, family, and professionalism in maintaining a long career in the demanding world of rock music.

    Real Estate

In 2002, Rudy Sarzo and his wife purchased a home in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, for approximately $505,000. Today, the property is estimated to be worth around $1.3 million.
