President William Ruto has appointed Professor Isaac Muthure Macharia as the new Chancellor of Karatina University.
The appointment was made through a gazette notice dated April 11, 2025, and will run for a period of five years.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint—Prof. Isaac Muthure Macharia to be the Chancellor of Karatina University, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 11th April, 2025,” read the official notice.
Karatina University, located about 15 kilometers north of Karatina town, began as Moi University Central Kenya Campus in 2007 with just 100 students.
In 2010, it became a constituent college and was renamed Karatina University College. It was later granted full university status in 2013 and officially named Karatina University.
The university’s main campus is in Kagochi, the site of the former university college.
In August 2024, all its satellite campuses—including those in Nanyuki, Karatina town, and Itiati—were merged into the main campus at the start of the 2024/25 academic year.
The Vice Chancellor of Karatina University is Prof. Linus M. Gitonga.
