President William Ruto has disclosed details of a telephone conversation he held with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, saying the two leaders discussed ways of strengthening relations between Kenya and Germany.

Ruto said he thanked the German government for its continued support, including a €45 million (Sh6.6 billion) facility that will help expand Kenya’s energy generation capacity.

The President also said they reviewed progress on the bilateral labour agreement signed earlier this year, which is expected to give more young Kenyans opportunities to work in Germany.

“We noted our strong and enduring cordial relations, and agreed to continue strengthening them,” Ruto said in a statement.

He added that the two leaders discussed growing trade and investment ties between Africa and Europe, and agreed that the upcoming EU-Africa Summit in Luanda, Angola, will provide an important platform to deepen cooperation.

On regional peace and security, Ruto said they spoke about ongoing conflicts in Somalia, Sudan, and Eastern DRC, stressing the need for urgent solutions and expressing hope that Germany will continue to support peace efforts.
