President William Ruto on Thursday held a meeting with Members of Parliament from the Mount Kenya region ahead of his scheduled visit later this month.
The meeting, held at State House Nairobi, focused on development programs aimed at transforming the region.
“With Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, we met MPs from Mt Kenya counties to discuss the progress we are making in coffee, tea, and dairy farming, infrastructure development, affordable housing, and fresh produce markets, among other areas,” Ruto said.
This visit comes after months of political tension in the region, following the removal of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua from office.
Ruto’s tour is expected to be both a development mission and a test of his political influence in the region, where Gachagua still commands significant support.
Nyandarua Woman Representative Faith Gitau urged residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome the President, dismissing claims that the recent leadership shake-ups in the National Assembly and Senate would weaken the region’s political standing.
“He (the President) will be bringing us development. Our people should come out in large numbers to welcome him and not heckle him,” she said, insisting that Ruto’s visit would unlock stalled projects and uplift the region.
Ruto last toured Mt Kenya on November 16, 2023, during the installation of Bishop Peter Kimani Ndung’u in Embu County.
The event, which saw him share a stage with Gachagua, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and former President Uhuru Kenyatta, was marked by a lukewarm reception from the congregation.
