President William Ruto ordered the immediate deployment of a multi-agency emergency response team to support rescue and relief operations following devastating floods that have hit parts of Nairobi and other regions across the country.
This came after floods killed 23 people and displaced many in Nairobi alone. Many others are missing.
In a statement on Saturday, Ruto said the ongoing flooding has caused widespread suffering, including loss of lives, displacement of families and destruction of property.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are also with all those whose lives have been disrupted by this disaster,” Ruto said.
He said the emergency response team will be led by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and will work alongside the Kenya Defence Forces and other emergency agencies to intensify rescue operations.
The team will coordinate evacuation efforts, support affected communities and ensure residents in danger are moved to safer areas.
Ruto also directed the immediate release of relief food from national strategic reserves to assist families affected by the floods.
In addition, the government will cover hospital bills for victims injured during the flooding who are currently receiving treatment in public health facilities. Emergency humanitarian assistance will also be provided to displaced families.
He said the national government is working closely with the Nairobi City County Government and other county administrations to ensure a coordinated response to the crisis.
At the same time, Ruto acknowledged that the floods highlight the urgent need for long-term solutions to persistent flooding in urban areas.
He pointed to the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme as a key long-term strategy aimed at restoring river ecosystems, improving drainage systems and reducing flood risks within the city.
“These efforts will be strengthened and accelerated as part of our commitment to protecting lives, property and the environment,” the President said.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by emergency responders.
