    Early Life

Sabeer Bhatia was born on December 30, 1968, in Chandigarh, India, and raised in Bangalore. He attended The Bishop’s School in Pune before enrolling at St. Joseph’s College in Bangalore. His academic excellence earned him a place at Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, but he later transferred to the United States on a prestigious Caltech Transfer Scholarship.

Bhatia completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and then pursued a master’s degree at Stanford University. It was at Stanford that he was introduced to the booming world of Silicon Valley, which would later shape his career in technology.

The Birth of Hotmail and Microsoft Acquisition

After finishing his studies, Bhatia landed his first job as a hardware engineer at Apple Computers and Firepower Systems Inc. While working in Silicon Valley, he was fascinated by how the internet was changing communication. This realization led him and his colleague Jack Smith to develop the idea of a web-based email service—what would become Hotmail.

On July 4, 1996, they officially launched Hotmail, one of the first free, web-based email services in the world. The platform quickly gained popularity, attracting millions of users worldwide. Within just two years, Hotmail had amassed over 364 million registered users, making it the largest email provider at the time.

In 1998, Microsoft acquired Hotmail for an estimated $400 million, integrating it into its suite of online services under MSN Hotmail. Bhatia remained with Microsoft for about a year before venturing into new business opportunities.
