Safaricom has announced that its Chief Financial Services Officer, Esther Waititu, will leave the company on 31 July 2026 to pursue other opportunities, ending a three-year stint during which she oversaw the rapid evolution of M-PESA into a broader digital financial services ecosystem.

In an internal communication to employees, Group CEO Peter Ndegwa credited Waititu with driving key milestones that strengthened M-PESA’s position as Kenya’s leading digital financial platform.

Since joining Safaricom in February 2023, Waititu has overseen sustained growth in M-PESA revenue and customer adoption while expanding the platform beyond mobile payments into savings, insurance, credit, investments and payments.

Among her notable achievements was leading the migration of M-PESA to the cloud-native Fintech 2.0 platform, a move that modernised the service’s technology infrastructure, improved reliability and expanded the Daraja developer ecosystem.

Her tenure also saw the launch and expansion of major financial services initiatives, including the Safaricom Insurance Agency and Ziidi, an investment ecosystem that includes the Ziidi Money Market Fund and Ziidi Trader.

Safaricom said Waititu also championed solutions aimed at supporting micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, including **Pochi la Biashara**, which enables merchants to separate personal and business finances while improving access to digital financial services.

Beyond her executive role, Waititu served as a trustee of the Safaricom Foundation, contributing to the company’s community transformation agenda.

Following her departure, Boniface Mungania, currently Director of Public Sector Digital Transformation, will assume the role of Chief Financial Services Officer in an acting capacity.

In his message, Ndegwa thanked Waititu for her leadership, describing her contribution as transformative and wishing her success in the next chapter of her career.
