Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja met with Persons with Disabilities at City Hall, who are informal traders affected by the ban on hawking along pedestrian walkways.
He instructed them to have a meeting between their leadership and city county officials in order to find a solution.
This meeting was held by a number of Chief Officers as well as directors from the relevant departments.
During the meeting, it was decided that going forward, all hawkers, including those with disabilities, must operate from designated areas to create a city that is safe, organized, and business-friendly.
This decision was made to ensure that the city remains organized.
All traders have equal opportunities to conduct their business, but with order.
Sakaja has always been a strong advocate for inclusivity and ensuring that the rights of PWDs are protected.
The traders will receive 18 wheelchairs to enhance their operations.
Meanwhile, the implementation of roads recarpeting projects in the central business district by the Nairobi City County Government is in line with Governor Sakaja’s manifesto to improve mobility and create a greener and cleaner city for all.
Kimathi Lane, Haile Selassie Road, and Mfangano lane have been in desperate need of recarpeting due to their deteriorating conditions.
The worn-out roads have not only been causing inconvenience and delays for commuters but also contributing to increased pedestrians’ safety risks.
This has been a major concern for Governor Sakaja, who has always been committed to improving the quality of life for Nairobians by easing mobility.
Sakaja’s vision for a better Nairobi has come to fruition with the ongoing roads recarpeting projects and construction of new roads in Nairobi City County wards funded by the Ward Development Fund.
The improved roads will improve the flow of traffic and also provide a smoother and safer commute for motorists and pedestrians.
With widened lanes, designated pedestrian walkways, and better traffic management.
