Scott McKenzie was an American singer and songwriter who had a net worth of $1.5 million at the time of his death in 2012. He earned his fortune primarily through his music career, songwriting, record sales and performances.

McKenzie was best known for his 1967 hit song “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair),” which became one of the defining songs of the 1960s counterculture movement. The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts in the United Kingdom.

Beyond his solo career, McKenzie was a member of the folk trio The Journeymen and later co-wrote the Beach Boys’ hit song “Kokomo.” He also performed with touring versions of The Mamas & the Papas.

McKenzie died on August 18, 2012, at the age of 73.

    Early Life

Scott McKenzie was born Philip Blondheim in January 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida. He developed an interest in music at an early age and eventually became involved in vocal groups while growing up.

As a teenager, McKenzie performed with a high school group called The Singing Strings. He later joined a doo-wop group known as The Abstracts, which included fellow musician John Phillips.

The Abstracts eventually changed their name to The Smoothies and recorded two singles for Decca Records. Although the group did not achieve major commercial success, the experience helped McKenzie establish himself as a professional musician.

    The Journeymen

In 1961, McKenzie teamed up with John Phillips and Dick Weissman to form the folk trio The Journeymen.

The group recorded three albums for Capitol Records and became part of the growing folk music scene of the early 1960s. The Journeymen also performed on the television music variety program “Hootenanny.”

McKenzie’s association with Phillips later became important to his career. Phillips would go on to become the leader of The Mamas & the Papas, while McKenzie pursued a solo career after turning down an opportunity to join the group.

    Scott McKenzie and “San Francisco”

Scott McKenzie’s biggest career breakthrough came in 1967 with the release of “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair).”

Written by John Phillips, the song was recorded by McKenzie and used to promote the Monterey International Pop Music Festival. It quickly became associated with the hippie and counterculture movements of the 1960s.

The song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for four consecutive weeks. It also reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom.

“San Francisco” became an international hit and reportedly sold more than seven million copies worldwide. Its enduring popularity made McKenzie closely associated with the cultural changes of the late 1960s.

The song was later featured in films including “The Rock” and “Forrest Gump,” helping introduce McKenzie’s music to new generations.

    Solo Career

Following his work with The Journeymen, McKenzie established himself as a solo artist.

His debut solo studio album, “The Voice of Scott McKenzie,” was released in 1967. The album followed the success of “San Francisco” and showcased McKenzie’s distinctive folk-pop sound.

He released his second and final studio album, “Stained Glass Morning,” in 1970. Although he never replicated the commercial success of his breakthrough single, McKenzie remained active as a songwriter and performer.

    Songwriting Career

McKenzie’s career extended beyond performing his own music. He also became a successful songwriter.

One of his notable songwriting achievements came through his collaboration with John Phillips on “Kokomo,” which became a major hit for the Beach Boys.

Released in 1988, “Kokomo” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became one of the Beach Boys’ biggest commercial successes.

McKenzie’s songwriting work provided another source of income throughout his career and strengthened his connection to some of the most influential musicians of the 1960s and 1980s.

    The Mamas & the Papas

Although McKenzie declined an invitation to join The Mamas & the Papas during the group’s early years, he later became associated with the group through its touring lineup.

Later in his career, McKenzie performed with the road version of The Mamas & the Papas. His association with John Phillips and the group remained an important part of his musical legacy.

    Personal Life and Death

McKenzie largely kept his personal life away from the spotlight compared with many other musicians from his era.

In the later years of his life, he experienced health problems. He was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in 2010, a neurological condition that affected his health.

McKenzie died on August 18, 2012, at the age of 73.

He left behind a musical legacy largely defined by “San Francisco,” a song that became closely associated with the social and cultural changes of the 1960s. His work with The Journeymen, his solo recordings and his songwriting contributions to other artists also cemented his place in American popular music.
