Sebastian Antero Aho is a Finnish professional ice hockey player who serves as a forward and alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on July 26, 1997, in Rauma, Finland, he grew up in a hockey family in Oulu.

His father, Harri Aho, was a former defenseman who played for Oulun Kärpät.

Aho is widely regarded as one of the most skilled and consistent two-way forwards in the league, known for his elite skating, playmaking ability, goal-scoring touch, and leadership on and off the ice.

Siblings

Sebastian has one sibling, an older brother named Samuli Aho.

The family spent time in Sweden during Harri Aho’s playing career, where locals found “Samuli” difficult to pronounce.

This experience reportedly influenced the choice of the more internationally recognizable name “Sebastian” for their second son.

Career

Aho began his professional career in Finland’s SM-liiga with Oulun Kärpät, making his debut in the 2013–14 season.

He played a key role in Kärpät’s Finnish championship win in 2015, scoring the overtime game-winning goal in Game 7 of the finals.

Selected 35th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he made his NHL debut in the 2016–17 season and quickly established himself as a top-line player.

In his rookie season, Aho recorded 49 points (24 goals and 25 assists).

He has since become the cornerstone of the Hurricanes’ offense, consistently delivering high point totals while excelling in all situations, including power plays and penalty kills.

Notable career highlights include recording points in the first 12 games of the 2018–19 season (tying an NHL record for season-opening point streaks) and leading the team in scoring during multiple playoff runs, including helping Carolina reach the Eastern Conference Final in 2019.

Aho signed a five-year, $42.27 million contract in 2019 after an offer sheet from the Montreal Canadiens (which Carolina matched) and later inked an eight-year, $78 million extension in 2023 with an average annual value of $9.75 million.

Accolades

Aho has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game three times (2019, 2022, and 2024), winning the Accuracy Shooting event in the 2022 Skills Competition.

Internationally, he was named the Best Forward at the 2018 IIHF World Championship after leading all skaters with nine goals.

He has repeatedly been named the Carolina Hurricanes’ Most Valuable Player by the local chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association and has received the Steve Chiasson Award for determination and dedication.

Aho has also won gold at the 2016 World Junior Championship with Finland and contributed to a bronze medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where he served as an alternate captain.
