A number of government websites linked to key ministries and state agencies were hit by a suspected cyberattack on Monday morning, leaving many of them inaccessible.

Websites belonging to the Ministries of Education, Labour, Environment, ICT, Tourism, State House, and Interior were among those affected. The attackers defaced the sites by changing their appearance and posting disturbing messages, including “Access denied by PCP,” “So are your local politicians.”

The disruption made it difficult for Kenyans who depend on these websites for information and essential online services.

Several state departments were also offline, including the Immigration Department, the Directorate of Public-Private Partnerships, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the State House website. Services under the Hustler Fund platform, the Immigration State Department, the Government Press, and Nairobi County were also affected.

By the time of publishing, the government and the affected agencies had not issued any statement on the outage. No group had claimed responsibility for the cyberattack.

A quick check showed that some major platforms, including eCitizen, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the Judiciary, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), and the National Police Service, were functioning normally.

Kenya has experienced similar cyber incidents in recent years, raising concerns about the security of government digital platforms.
