Sh30 million heroin seized, Nigerian suspect arrested in Mombasa crackdown

A major anti-narcotics operation has shaken Mombasa following the arrest of a Nigerian suspect believed to be part of a wider heroin trafficking syndicate operating along Kenya’s Coast.

Detectives drawn from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) apprehended Okwara Chimezie Emmanuel during an intelligence-led raid in the Mafisini area of Kadzandani. Authorities say the operation led to the recovery of heroin with an estimated street value of Sh30 million, marking one of the most significant recent drug seizures in the region.

Sources close to the investigation indicate that the suspect could be a key link in a broader network involving multiple actors, including Kenyan nationals suspected of facilitating storage, transportation and distribution of the наркотics.

Detectives have since launched a series of follow-up operations, with additional arrests expected as they move to dismantle the syndicate.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in court, where investigators will seek more time to complete inquiries and trace the origin and supply chain of the seized drugs.

The latest arrest underscores ongoing concerns about the Coast’s vulnerability to international drug cartels exploiting the Indian Ocean corridor. Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers have in recent months intensified operations in the region amid a surge in narcotics-related cases.

In January, detectives in Utange seized over 1.3 kilograms of heroin valued at more than Sh4 million during a joint operation involving ANU, TOCU and local police units. In a separate incident, another suspect was arrested in Kikambala with heroin worth KSh1.8 million, highlighting the scale and persistence of the illicit trade.

Security agencies say the renewed crackdown targets not only traffickers but also financiers and transnational networks accused of fueling drug abuse and organized crime in the country.

Analysts warn that heroin trafficking continues to pose a serious national security threat, contributing to addiction, violence, money laundering and corruption.

With one suspect now in custody and investigations widening, authorities signal that more arrests are imminent as efforts intensify to break the grip of drug cartels along the Coast.
