    Early Life

Shahid Khan was born on July 18, 1950, in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, into a middle-class family involved in the construction business. He had a brother named Tariq, who tragically passed away in his early twenties.

In 1967, at the age of 16, Khan moved to the United States to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He arrived with just $500, which represented his family’s entire savings. Finding himself without a place to stay, he rented a YMCA room for $2 a night and took a job in the facility’s kitchen, washing dishes for $1.20 an hour. This experience was eye-opening for Khan, as his modest hourly wage was more than what 99% of the population in Pakistan earned at the time.

Despite these challenges, Khan remained focused on his education. In 1971, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering, setting the foundation for his future success.

    Flex-N-Gate

Khan’s journey to billionaire status began at Flex-N-Gate, an auto parts manufacturer, where he worked as an engineering director after graduating. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to launch his own business, Bumper Works, in 1978, specializing in car bumpers for pickup trucks.

A few years later, he made a bold move by purchasing Flex-N-Gate from his former employer, Charles Butzow, merging it with Bumper Works. This decision proved to be a game-changer, as Khan secured contracts with major automakers. By 1984, he was supplying Toyota with bumpers, and by the end of the decade, he became the exclusive bumper supplier for Toyota’s entire U.S. vehicle line.

Over the years, Khan expanded Flex-N-Gate into a global powerhouse. By 2019, the company employed 25,000 people across 69 manufacturing plants worldwide, generating an annual revenue of $8.9 billion in 2020.

However, the company has faced challenges along the way. In 2012, Flex-N-Gate was fined $57,000 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for health violations at its Illinois plant. Additionally, protests from the United Automobile Workers (UAW) highlighted concerns over labor conditions. Despite these hurdles, Khan’s business empire has continued to thrive.

    Sports Ownership

Khan’s ambitions extended beyond the automotive industry into sports ownership, making him one of the most recognizable figures in the global sports industry.

    NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars

In 2010, Khan made his first attempt at purchasing an NFL team, bidding for a 60% stake in the St. Louis Rams. However, the deal fell through. He didn’t give up, and in 2011, he successfully acquired the Jacksonville Jaguars for $770 million from Wayne Weaver. This purchase made Khan the first person born outside the United States to own an NFL team. Under his ownership, the Jaguars have worked on expanding their global presence, particularly in the UK, where they have played annual games in London.

    Premier League

Khan’s interest in football extended beyond American football. In 2013, he purchased Fulham FC, a historic London-based soccer club, from Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed. While the exact purchase price was not disclosed, reports estimated the deal to be between £150-200 million.

    All Elite Wrestling (AEW)

In 2019, Khan and his son Tony Khan ventured into professional wrestling by co-founding All Elite Wrestling (AEW), a company that quickly became the biggest rival to WWE. While Tony serves as CEO and president, Shahid remains a key financial backer of the promotion. AEW has gained significant popularity and now airs weekly shows, challenging WWE’s dominance in the wrestling world.

    Other Business Ventures

Beyond auto parts and sports, Khan has explored other ventures. In 2020, he became the majority shareholder of the Black News Channel (BNC), an African-American-focused TV network. However, the network shut down in 2022, and its assets were later acquired by Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios, merging into TheGrio.

    Shahid Khan Accolades and Recognition

Khan’s remarkable achievements have earned him numerous awards and honors, particularly from his alma mater, the University of Illinois. Some of his notable recognitions include:

    • Distinguished Alumnus Award (1999)
    • Alumni Award for Distinguished Service (2006)

His success story continues to inspire immigrants, entrepreneurs, and sports fans worldwide.

    Personal Life

In 1977, Khan married Ann Carlson, whom he met at the University of Illinois. The couple has two children, including Tony Khan, who plays a crucial role in managing the Jacksonville Jaguars, Fulham FC, and AEW.

Khan’s billionaire status is reflected in his luxurious assets, including:

    • A mansion in Naples, Florida
    • An apartment in the Gold Coast neighborhood of Chicago
    • The superyacht Kismet, a luxury vessel built by Lürssen and featured in the 2019 Netflix film “6 Underground”
