Shubman Gill is an Indian international cricketer born on 8 September 1999 in the village of Chak Jaimal Singh Wala in Fazilka district, Punjab, into a Punjabi Sikh family.
A stylish right-handed top-order batsman, he has established himself as one of India’s leading players across formats.
He captains the Indian national team in Tests and ODIs, leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League, and represents Punjab in domestic cricket.
Often called the “Prince of Indian Cricket,” Gill rose from rural beginnings on his family’s agricultural land to become a multi-format star known for elegant strokeplay, consistency, and leadership.
Siblings
Shubman has one sibling, an elder sister named Shahneel Kaur Gill.
Born on 16 December 1997 in Fazilka, Punjab, she is roughly two years older than her brother.
She attended Manav Mangal Smart School in Mohali and later studied at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women in Chandigarh before pursuing a diploma in Business Administration at Red River College Polytechnic in Winnipeg, Canada.
She has worked as a success specialist or customer service representative with the food-ordering company SkipTheDishes and has built a presence as a social media influencer focusing on lifestyle, travel, fitness, and fashion content.
Shahneel is known as an animal lover and has appeared at several of her brother’s games.
Career
Gill showed exceptional talent from a very young age.
His father, who had wanted to play cricket himself, recognised the boy’s interest early and arranged intensive practice, including having farm workers bowl to him and creating a pitch on the family land.
To give him better opportunities, the family relocated to Mohali near the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

Gill progressed rapidly through age-group cricket, scoring heavily in inter-district and Under-16 matches, including a notable double century on Under-16 debut.
He made his List A debut for Punjab in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy and his first-class debut in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a century in only his second match.
His breakthrough came at the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, where he played a key role in India’s title win and was named Player of the Tournament.
Kolkata Knight Riders signed him for the IPL in 2018.
He made his ODI debut for India in 2019 against New Zealand, followed by his Test debut in Australia in late 2020, where a resilient 91 at the Gabba contributed to a historic series victory.
He later debuted in T20Is and has scored centuries in all three formats.
In the IPL he moved to Gujarat Titans, becoming a consistent high scorer and later captain.
By the mid-2020s he had taken over leadership of India’s Test and ODI sides, guiding the team through a transitional period and achieving notable results in overseas series.
He is known for rapid accumulation of runs, particularly in ODIs, where he holds several speed-related milestones.
Accolades
Gill’s achievements include being named Player of the Tournament at the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup.
He became the youngest player to score a double century in ODIs with an unbeaten 208 against New Zealand in 2023 and holds the record as the fastest man to reach 2,000 ODI runs (in 38 innings).
He has been named ICC Men’s Player of the Month on multiple occasions, becoming the first male player to win the award four times.
In the 2023 IPL season he won the Orange Cap as the leading run-scorer with 890 runs.
He has been selected in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year and has contributed to India winning titles including the ACC Asia Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy while serving in leadership roles.
As Test captain he has set records such as scoring heavily in debut series as leader and becoming one of the youngest Indians to achieve significant overseas successes.
