    Early Life

Siouxsie Sioux was born Susan Janet Ballion on May 27, 1957, in London, England. She was the youngest of three children born to Elizabeth and Marc Ballion. Her mother worked as a secretary, while her father was a bacteriologist originally from Wallonia, Belgium.

Ballion grew up in Chislehurst, Kent, and described her childhood as difficult. Her father struggled with alcoholism, and she often felt isolated during her early years. Her life took another difficult turn when she was nine years old after experiencing a traumatic incident involving a neighbor.

When Ballion was 14, her father passed away. The loss had a profound effect on her life, and she eventually left school at the age of 17. Around this time, she became involved in London’s emerging punk scene and began traveling with her friend Steven Severin, following the band Sex Pistols.

Her distinctive fashion style and bold presence quickly made her a recognizable figure in the London underground music scene.

    Rise of Siouxsie

In 1976, Ballion and Steven Severin formed Siouxsie and the Banshees, marking the beginning of one of the most influential bands of the post-punk era. Their first performance took place at the legendary 100 Club Punk Festival.

Shortly afterward, the band gained attention after appearing alongside the Sex Pistols on a controversial television program hosted by Bill Grundy. Around this time, Susan Ballion adopted the stage name Siouxsie Sioux.

The band released their debut single “Hong Kong Garden” in 1978, which became a major hit in the United Kingdom. Their first album, The Scream, received strong critical acclaim and reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart.

The group followed this success with Join Hands, which also charted in the UK and helped solidify their reputation in the alternative music scene.

    Musical Evolution

During the 1980s, Siouxsie and the Banshees continued to evolve musically. Their third album, Kaleidoscope, marked a new direction for the band and featured hit singles like “Happy House” and “Christine.” The album reached number five on the UK Albums Chart.

The band’s popularity grew further with albums such as:

    • Juju
    • A Kiss in the Dreamhouse
    • Hyæna, which featured guitarist Robert Smith

Their 1988 album Peepshow produced the band’s first major U.S. hit, “Peek-a-Boo.” Another notable single, Kiss Them for Me, became popular in the United States following the release of the album Superstition.

The band eventually released their final studio album, The Rapture, before disbanding.

    The Creatures

In 1981, Siouxsie formed the duo The Creatures with Banshees drummer Budgie. The duo explored experimental musical styles and released their debut album Feast, which included the single Miss the Girl.

Their later album Boomerang gained praise for blending diverse musical influences such as jazz, blues, and flamenco.

The Creatures continued releasing music through the 1990s and early 2000s, including Anima Animus and Hái!.

    Solo Career

Siouxsie launched her solo career in 2004, performing live shows and expanding her artistic work beyond band collaborations. In 2007, she released her debut solo album Mantaray, which was followed by an international tour.

Her performances during this period were captured in live recordings, including the concert DVD Dreamshow, filmed at the Royal Festival Hall.

In 2015, Sioux released the song Love Crime, which was featured in the finale of the television series Hannibal.

Throughout her career, she has collaborated with several notable artists, including Morrissey, Marc Almond, and Angelo Badalamenti.

    Personal Life

In 1991, Siouxsie married her longtime collaborator Budgie, drummer of Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Creatures. The couple lived together in the southwest of France for several years before divorcing in 2006.
