Three suspected terrorists were on Tuesday morning gunned down by officers drawn from the Recce Squad and anti-terror police unit in Likoni area, Mombasa.

Reports indicate that the three were gunned down in separate dawn operations.

The suspects are said to have been planning attacks and were mapping out areas to launch terror activities.

“We were able to identify an isolated house where they were hiding. We had a challenge of bad weather last night but we have succeeded to raid the place this morning,” said Paul Leting, the County Criminal Investigation Officer.

Police recovered assorted items including dozens of AK 47 ammunition, several pistol magazines loaded with ammunition, police and KDF uniforms, knives, a grenade and religious books.

The officers also recovered a G3 rifle used by the suspected militants to engage the police.

According to an eyewitness account, over 20 armed officers, who arrived in five vehicles, participated in the operations.

The raid brought business to a standstill.

“We heard loud gunfire that lasted for minutes. We were locked in our rooms when the officers arrived and asked us not to come out,” said an eyewitness only identified as Salim.

However, residents were kept at bay as the police officers cordoned off the area to minimize movement.

The incident comes days after police arrested a suspect linked to the Dusit D2 terror attack in January that left at least 21 people dead and several others injured.

Fawaz Ahmed Hamdun was arrested on Sunday night at his house in Majengo Mombasa.

The 28-year-old allegedly played a key role in the re-entry of DusitD2 suicide bomber Mahir Riziki to Kenya from Somalia to execute the attack.
