A British man killed in a hit-and-run incident involving a vehicle in the motorcade of President William Ruto was in Nairobi to visit his sister and nephew.

The man, who has been named as 79-year-old Edgar Charles Frederick, died on Thursday after being struck in the accident on Ngong Road, Nairobi.

An autopsy was conducted on his body on Friday March 14 and concluded he died out of multiple body injuries.

Police and his family were present when the exercise was conducted at the Lee Funeral Home.

Police spokesman Michael Muchiri said the man had come to visit Nairobi and see his relatives who are residents.

“We understand from the family Frederick was in Nairobi to visit his relatives who include a sister and nephew,” he said.

The police said the driver, who failed to stop after the incident, would appear in court following an investigation.

There has been an uproar on social media following Thursday’s incident.

Police said the car involved in the accident was that of the Regional Commissioner in Nairobi.

The car has been identified and detained for probe, police spokesman Michael Muchiri said.

“The driver of government motor vehicle attached to Nairobi Regional Coordinator’s office is out on cash bail awaiting to be arraigned in court,” he said.

It was part of the president’s convoy and racing ahead when it hit and killed the man as he crossed at a zebra crossing oblivious of the oncoming vehicles.

The British High Commission in Nairobi was informed of the incident, police said.

The motorcade was racing towards Kibera as the president embarked on his fourth day of the tour of Nairobi when the accident happened Thursday March 13.

Police and witnesses said the driver involved in the accident did not stop.

Other officers said this was not possible because of security reasons. This is because the president’s car was behind few meters away.

A spokesperson for the UK High Commission said officials were aware of the reports and were seeking more information.

Videos posted on social media show a man in blue jeans and a light-coloured shirt lying bleeding on the road outside a busy shopping area.

Other pictures show the victim covered in a checked shawl, known locally as a Maasai Shuka.

The incident attracted a mob at the scene before police arrived to pick up the body to the mortuary pending autopsy and identification.

Police said they are investigating the accident.

The incident caused a traffic snarl-up in the area.

Presidential cars usually move at high speed for among others security reasons.
