Stephen Ames is a professional golfer known for his smooth swing and consistent success across multiple tours.

Born Stephen Michael Ames on April 28, 1964, in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago, he holds dual citizenship in Trinidad and Tobago and Canada.

Of English and Portuguese descent, he grew up in Pointe-à-Pierre on the Petrotrin employee compound, where he first learned the game at the local staff club.

His talent developed early with support from his father, Michael, and he later represented Canada in international competition after gaining citizenship through his first wife.

Ames played college golf at the College of Boca Raton before turning professional and establishing a long career that spanned the European Tour, PGA Tour, and now the PGA Tour Champions.

Stephen has one brother, Robert, and two sisters, Anna Lisa and Carolyn.

Robert has played an especially prominent role in Stephen’s golf journey, serving as his caddie during several key moments on the PGA Tour, including the 2006 Players Championship victory and the memorable 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship against Tiger Woods.

Robert himself is an accomplished golfer and was once considered one of the top players to emerge from Trinidad.

    Career

Ames turned professional in the early 1990s and initially competed on the European Tour, where he secured two victories: the 1994 Open V33 Grand Lyon and the 1996 Benson and Hedges International Open.

He joined the PGA Tour in 1997 (full membership in 1998) and gradually built momentum, earning his first PGA Tour win at the 2004 Cialis Western Open (now known as the BMW Championship).

His most celebrated triumph came in 2006 at THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where he fired a final-round 67 to win by six shots, with his brother Robert on the bag.

Ames added a fourth PGA Tour title at the 2009 Children’s Miracle Network Classic.

Over his PGA Tour career, he amassed more than $19 million in earnings, recorded numerous top-10 finishes, and reached a world ranking as high as 17th.

After turning 50, he transitioned to the PGA Tour Champions, where he has thrived with multiple wins, including a strong stretch of victories in 2023 and 2024 that demonstrated his enduring competitiveness well into his 60s.

    Accolades

Ames claimed four PGA Tour victories and two on the European Tour, along with additional wins on the Ben Hogan Tour (predecessor to the Korn Ferry Tour) and other events, bringing his total professional wins to 20.

On the PGA Tour Champions, he has secured nine victories and consistently posted strong performances, including multiple top-10 finishes and significant earnings.

In 2014, he was inducted into the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, honoring his contributions to the sport in Canada.

His 2006 Players Championship win remains a highlight, often cited as one of the most dominant final rounds in the event’s history at the iconic Stadium Course.
