Police in Bondo arrested a 28-year-old Tanzanian national in connection with the murder of a second-year student at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology.

This happened as hundreds of students staged peaceful protests demanding justice.

According to the police the suspect was arrested on Monday at around noon over the killing of 20-year-old education student Alice Riang’a, also known as Sabina.

The arrest followed the positive identification of the body by the deceased’s father, Richard Riang’a Kiage, after the body had initially been reported as unknown.

Police said about 700 students took part in demonstrations within Bondo town following news of the arrest and confirmation of the student’s death.

The protesters marched peacefully along the University Town road to the police station and later to the mortuary, where they were allowed to view the body before returning to the university.

Authorities indicated that the demonstrations remained calm throughout, with no incidents of violence or destruction reported and no teargas used during crowd management.

The killing of the student has sparked outrage among students and residents, with calls for swift investigations and justice.

Reports indicate Alice Riang’a had been missing for several days before her body was discovered in a forested area in Barkowino, Bondo.

The motive of the murder was not immediately established. Police said the suspect was expected in court for a misceleneous application pending further investigations into the murder.

Murder incidents have been on the rise amid efforts to solve them.

Police say up to eight murder incidents are reported daily and most of them remain unsolved for now.

Meanwhile, police in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, launched investigations into a suspected murder after a 43-year-old man was found dead inside his house in Kamwangi area.

According to police, the incident was reported on Monday at about 3.20pm after a relative discovered the body of Harrison Kiago Muthoni lying on the floor of his sitting room.

The deceased’s cousin had gone to visit him at around 9am but received no response after calling out to him. He reportedly pushed the door open and found Muthoni dead inside the house.

Police said blood spatter was observed in both the bedroom and sitting room, and a blood-stained knife was recovered from the sitting room. However, investigators noted that the body had no visible stab wounds.

The body was moved to General Kago Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem examination and further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
