The Alchemist is one of the most influential and respected figures in hip-hop production.
Born Alan Daniel Maman on October 25, 1977, in Beverly Hills, California, he is professionally known as The Alchemist (sometimes stylized as ALC).
A record producer, DJ, and occasional rapper, he has built a legendary reputation through his intricate sample-based beats, dusty soul loops, and cinematic soundscapes that define much of modern underground and mainstream hip-hop.
Raised in an affluent Jewish family, his father is Israeli, and he has described his upbringing as comfortable yet rebellious against the suburban environment, he gravitated toward hip-hop culture early on, embracing breakdancing, graffiti, and rap as outlets for expression.
Siblings
The Alchemist has at least one sibling, a brother named Neil Maman.
He has spoken fondly of family influences in his life and work, but he keeps much of his personal relationships out of the spotlight.
Career
The Alchemist Career began in the early 1990s as a teenager.
At age 14, he formed the rap duo The Whooliganz with Scott Caan (son of actor James Caan), adopting the alias Mudfoot.

They signed to Tommy Boy Records and released the single “Put Your Handz Up” in 1993 as part of the Soul Assassins crew affiliated with Cypress Hill.
When their album was shelved, Caan pursued acting, while Maman shifted to production after touring and learning from figures like DJ Muggs.
This pivot proved transformative. He gained early recognition producing for Mobb Deep, including key tracks on projects like their classic album The Infamous.
Over the decades, he has produced for an extraordinary range of artists, including Eminem, Nas, Freddie Gibbs, Action Bronson, Schoolboy Q, Roc Marciano, Earl Sweatshirt, Boldy James, Danny Brown, Larry June, and the Griselda collective (Westside Gunn, Conway the Machine, and Benny the Butcher).
He formed the group Gangrene with Oh No, and contributed to the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack (composing for the radio station “The Lab” alongside others).
He also released solo instrumental albums and collaborative projects.
His label, ALC Records, and consistent output have solidified his status as a go-to architect of boom-bap revival and experimental hip-hop.
Accolades
The Alchemist has been widely praised as one of the greatest producers in hip-hop history, earning spots on lists of top beatmakers and influential Jewish artists in rap.
Projects he has helmed, such as Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist’s Alfredo (nominated for Best Rap Album at the Grammy Awards), various Griselda-related works, and critically acclaimed albums like Fetti (with Freddie Gibbs and Currensy) and Yacht Rock 2 (with Action Bronson), have received widespread acclaim.
