Three people have been arrested in Marimanti Market, Tharaka-Nithi County, after they were found transporting four live Pancake Tortoises hidden inside a carton.
The suspects were nabbed on Sunday, August 10, 2025, during a joint operation by officers from the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). Police said the trio is in custody awaiting processing and arraignment, while the tortoises have been secured as evidence.
“The National Police Service commends the public for providing the intelligence that led to the successful operation,” NPS said in a statement.
In a separate incident in Migori County, police in Nyatike Sub-County arrested two suspects and seized narcotics and illicit alcohol during a targeted crackdown. The operation, conducted on the same day by officers from Karungu Police Station, led to the recovery of 140 rolls, one broom, and 40 sticks of suspected cannabis sativa, as well as 1.5 litres of suspected chang’aa brew. Both suspects remain in custody awaiting court proceedings.
Meanwhile, along the Kenya-Ethiopia border, a multi-agency security team recovered eight stolen cattle at Lowaat border point between Kibish, Kenya, and Dassanech Woreda, Ethiopia.
The animals had been stolen from Welegech on August 6, 2025, by suspected bandits. The recovery operation, led by Kokuro Assistant County Commissioner Evans Kimoni and Kokuro Police Station’s Deputy OCS, was carried out in partnership with local chiefs and county officials.
The cattle were returned to the Kenyan administration without incident. Authorities from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and cooperation along the shared border.
