Three police officers have been killed after their vehicle run over a landmine in Liboi. The incident happened seven kilometers from Kulan shopping center.

The Administration Police officers were traveling to Garissa when the incident occurred in Kulan area, according to Regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh.

Three other officers injured in the attack have been flown to Nairobi for specialized treatment.

“They (the officers) were part of the heightened surveillance to secure the area,” the IG told Capital FM News on Wednesday.

A statement from Police Headquarters said the terrorists are under immense pressure due to the military operation in Somalia and are now opting to sneak to Kenya.

According to police, relying on intelligence reports, the terrorists have now split into small groups with key targets at the border towns of Mandera where several incidents were reported last week when four people and a chief was killed.

Kenya Red Cross said on Twitter that eight people had been injured between Liboi and Kulan.

Boinnet is now urging the public across the country to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security forces, with fears that the terrorists may be out to stage attacks similar to what happened in the UK on Monday killing 22 people.

“Among those we are pursuing include one Abdirizak Maalim Aweys who hails from El Ram location in Mandera County,” the police boss said.

Aweys, according to police is behind the recent killing of four quarry workers.

He is also believed to be, “behind the laying of IEDs along the roads in Elwak, Kotulo, Chabibar and Fatuma in Mandera Central Sub County.”

With heightened surveillance, the IG has urged members of the public to volunteer information, “that will assist in bringing these terrorists to book for action in accordance with the law.”

According to police, terrorist operatives in the country and the region are likely to stage ‘copycat’ attacks similar to the one in the United Kingdom.

“We wish to appeal to the public to be watchful for any suspicious activity or on the part of any person,” Boinnet appealed.
