Toi Market Traders Express Fears of Ethnic Clashes as Land Grabbing Cartels Incite them

A group of Toi Market traders fears that there will be serious ethnic clashes in the area if the push by a group of cartels to stir commotion in the market is not contained immediately.

According to the traders who fear being named as they will be targeted by the cartels, no government leader is willing to properly and conclusively address the issue as the DC, DO and Chief all have ganged up in support of a cartel of land grabbers led by one Pagal Bashir and Gidos Hamza who are eyeing the Nairobi County land which the traders are occupying.

Pagal Bashir and Gidos Hamza are believed to represent a group of Somali based individuals who are benefitting from piracy and are looking for where to invest money generated from illegal activities which also includes charcoal sales and terrorism.

Pagal and Gidos have reportedly procured the services of a gang of youths based in Kibera who are from a single ethnic group. The gang is tasked with causing a ruckus with the traders in Toi Market so as to have them respond with violence and help the grabbers achieve their objectives.

Pagal, Gidos and the gang are supported in their schemes by area Chief Yusuf Omoke, DC Masese and DO Mongashe who all come from a single ethnic group.

The traders have written letters to the Kilimani OCPD, Nairobi County government and County Commissioner but they have received only a cold shoulder from the government officials who all seems compromised by the corrupt cartels.

Toi Market is one of the largest informal markets in Nairobi with over 5,000 traders plying their trade in the market every single day. It is located on the outskirts of Kibera slum and a frequent target of corrupt gangs willing to grab government properties.

The market witnesses violence during the 2008 post election violence.
